Democrat Hannah Pingree won election Tuesday as governor of Maine, defeating Republican Bobby Charles. Pingree is a former speaker of the Maine House of Representatives. The race was open because Democratic Gov. Janet Mills, who has served since 2018, is term-limited. Charles is a former U.S. assistant secretary of state. An independent candidate, Rick Bennett, was also on the ballot. The Associated Press declared Pingree the winner at 11:29 p.m. EST.
