Republican Jim Risch wins reelection to U.S. Senate from Idaho

Republican Jim Risch won election Wednesday to the U.S. Senate representing Idaho, defeating independent candidate Todd Achilles. Risch, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was running for a fourth term. He has defended President Donald Trump’s foreign policy objectives and focused on strategic competition with China. Risch was strongly favored to defeat Achilles, a U.S. Army veteran and former state legislator. A Democrat, David Roth, dropped out of the race earlier in the year. The Associated Press declared Risch the winner at 1:31 a.m. EST.
