BURNABY — SkyTrain service in Metro Vancouver was disrupted Wednesday morning after a fire near a station in Burnaby, B.C.
TransLink said in a release that the fire happened near the Gilmore station, resulting in the shutdown of the station as well as the nearby Rupert and Brentwood stations.
Bus bridge services were set up at one point in both directions while the Millennium Line route was closed, but SkyTrain service later resumed.
Burnaby assistant fire chief Joe Mora said in an interview that the fire was reported at 5:45 a.m. Wednesday, and firefighters arrived to find a plastic bench on fire.
Mora said the plastic created heavy, black smoke, although the fire was relatively small and extinguished within minutes of firefighters’ arrival.
“I think that we got a lot of calls on it because that produces a lot of black smoke, and that also affects people trying to get to work,” Mora said.
Videos on social media showed the fire under the station’s elevated platform, sending heavy smoke inside the station.
TransLink said Wednesday it was investigating SkyTrain infrastructure affected by the fire to make sure Gilmore station and the tracks were safe before services were restored.
