Evacuations and state of local emergency over drenching B.C. rain

ZEBALLOS — Evacuations have been ordered and a state of local emergency has been declared over drenching rain on northern Vancouver Island.

The Village of Zeballos has ordered the evacuation of 22 properties due to landslide risks that it says pose a threat to life and safety.

The Strathcona Regional District, which covers the region that includes parts of the coastal mainland, declared the local emergency and says emergency operations centres have been activated by both the village and district.

The emergency has been triggered by the first major weather system of British Columbia’s storm season.

Wind and rainfall warnings have spread across most of B.C.’s coast and parts of the Interior.

Rainfall of up to 130 millimetres has been forecast for parts of Vancouver Island and the central coast, where a rainfall warning issued Thursday remains in effect.
