Memorial plaque for slain Kamloops RCMP officers stolen from park

Police are seeking public assistance after a memorial plaque at Peterson Creek Park in Kamloops for slain RCMP officers was stolen.

The brass plaque was placed at the park in memory of Elwood Joseph Keck, Gordon Eric Pedersen and Donald George Weisgerber, three Kamloops RCMP constables who were shot and killed while responding to a call on June 18, 1962.

The theft was reported to Kamloops RCMP on July 26, around 9:30 a.m., according to a news release from Kamloops RCMP.

“For someone to deface and steal a memorial honouring constables who died while trying to protect the residents of this community is really sad, it’s shameful to say the least,” Kamloops RCMP Supt. Sydney Lecky said in the release. “I can’t imagine how the families of these constables, and of the countless other constables who risk their lives on behalf of this city, must feel knowing someone would steal a plaque recognizing their sacrifice."

The brass, rectangular plaque has a half circle on the top with the RCMP emblem. It was mounted to a stone monument at the park.
