UPDATE: Police incident near UBCO in Kelowna resolved; man with gun arrested
A suspect is in custody after RCMP responded to reports this morning of a man with a gun acting erratically.
Kelowna RCMP closed Academy Way between Hindle Drive and Acadia Street this morning, Sept. 23, near the UBC Okanagan campus as members of the heavily armed emergency response team were deployed to apprehend the suspect.
A woman at a residence in the 800 block of Academy Way reported to police she had been assaulted by a man who had a gun and that he was acting erratically, according to an RCMP media release.
“Officers evacuated the surrounding residences and established contact with the suspect,” Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy said in the release.
By 10:45 a.m. police had arrested a 28-year-old Kelowna man without incident. The man remains in custody.
“We wish to thank the public for their cooperation during this operation,” Kelowna RCMP Insp. Adam MacIntosh said in the release. “We were able to bring this incident to a safe resolution for everyone and the roadway and area are open once again.”
