Okanagan College English teacher in running for short story prize

KELOWNA – Alix Hawley isn’t a stranger to shortlists.

The Okanagan College English Literature and Creative Writing instructor’s story “Jumbo” is shortlisted for the 2014 CBC Short Story Prize.

Hawley was shortlisted for the same award last year. She also won the CBC Bloodlines writing competition.

The inspiration for “Jumbo” came from a Victorian-era photograph of a hippopotamus named Obaysch at the London Zoo.

Hawley says she was drawn to the expressions on the spectators’ faces, specifically the young girl on the right who is looking straight at the camera.

You can vote for Hawley and check out who else made the shortlist online.

The winner will be announced on March 24.
