Snowshoeing in June? Cool weather gives unique opportunity at Sun Peaks

There’s still too much snow at Sun Peaks Resort to open up all the mountain biking amenities, but anybody who’s eager to explore the mountain can still do so via snowshoes.

“Mother Nature has dealt us a rainy, cool (and snowy) spring,” reads a press release from the resort.

“While Bike Park and trail crews have been hard at work doing what they can to prepare for summer riding and hiking, the trails require more time to round into form.”

Only Progression Park bike trails are currently open, which are accessible from the Village Platter lift. June 27 is the targeted opening for the bike park off the Sunburst Express chairlift.

In early July the new Sundance Bike Park zone and chairlift will open. More details will be shared later this month.

“We know there may be some disappointment in a delayed Bike Park opening, but rest assured this is in the best interest of the long-term quality, condition, and sustainability of the trail network,” the release says.

And while the Sunburst chairlift can’t be used by mountain bikers when it first opens on June 17, it will allow for snowshoers.

“Regular hiking trails will not be open at this time, there’s just too much snow, so we thought what better than to take advantage and pull out the snowshoes again. Please note, skis and snowboards are not permitted to board the chairlift, regardless of how tempting it may be.”
