Soccer, pickleball, softball, fenced dog park all being pitched for Peachland park

Plans for Peachland’s newly-acquired public park includes a full-sized soccer field, softball diamond, pickleball, an off-leash dog park and more.

Turner Park was acquired by the District of Peachland from a private company after residents created a petition, urging the city to use it as park space, in 2021.

“Peachland does not have any community youth baseball or soccer teams for its children. Over 250 Peachland young children ages 4-6 have been taught to play baseball and soccer at the Peachland Community Center over the last 5 years,” according to a report that will be presented to Peachland council Tuesday, June 14.

The long-term plan for the park includes include a fenced dog park, playground area, two pickleball courts, a half-sized basketball court, and trail connections in addition to a softball field, soccer field, a bookable spot for weddings, a playground and even a short winter tobogganing slope.

The 5.5-acre property is one of few remaining undeveloped properties able to accommodate athletic fields and other park amenities, according to the report.

A number of existing elements are currently in place at the park including backstops for baseball/softball, grassed sports field, a basketball court, public washrooms, a tobogganing hill, and perimeter fencing. Some of the items, including the sports field area, are in need of repair to support safe public recreation and sports. As such, the park is currently designated as an “undeveloped field,” according to the report.

In the concept design, existing trees will also remain, and new trees will be placed strategically to create ample opportunities for shaded public rest areas while also protecting views of the lake.

If council approves the recommended park concept, city administration would investigate costs and potential improvements in 2022/2022 to support future softball and soccer league activities.
