Georgian demonstrators protest gay film in Tbilisi

MOSCOW – Hundreds of demonstrators have gathered outside a movie theatre in the capital of the country of Georgia to protest the showing of a film about homosexual attraction.

The crowd in downtown Tbilisi on Friday evening tried to break into the cinema but were held back by police. Georgian news reports said several people were injured in the disorder.

The movie, “And Then We Danced,” portrays a young male in the Georgian national ballet company who is attracted to a male rival. It is directed by Levan Akin, a Swedish national of Georgian descent.

Animosity toward homosexuality is widespread in Georgia, a predominantly Orthodox Christian country.
