MONTREAL – The leaders of Quebec’s four main political parties will participate in an English-language debate ahead of the Oct. 1 provincial election.

The Sept. 17 event at the Radio-Canada studios in Montreal will be the province’s first English-language TV debate.

A media consortium said Tuesday the 90-minute debate will be broadcast on severalplatforms, with details on the format and moderator to follow.

The debate will be carried live by CBC Quebec, CJAD 800, City, CTV News, Global News and the Montreal Gazette.

Liberal Premier Philippe Couillard, Parti Quebecois Leader Jean-Francois Lisee, Coalition Avenir Quebec Leader Francois Legault and Quebec soldaire co-spokesperson Manon Masse had indicated a few weeks ago they were willing to hold a debate in English.

The only other English language debate in the province was held during the 1985 campaign and was broadcast on radio.

The English debate will be sandwiched between a pair of French-language debates that have already been scheduled for Sept. 13 and Sept. 20 at Radio-Canada and the TVA network respectively.
