The Latest: Soldiers flown off high Colorado mountain peak

ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK, Colo. – The Latest on the rescue of military personnel on a training mission in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park (all times local):

A helicopter has ferried a group of soldiers to safety after they ran into trouble on a training mission on a high Colorado mountain peak.

Rocky Mountain National Park spokeswoman Kyle Patterson says the group from Fort Carson in Colorado Springs planned to climb 14,259-foot Longs Peak on Thursday, but a few of them had trouble continuing. They called for help and ended up spending the night on the mountain.

On Friday, they helped one another to the top of the snowy peak, where a helicopter met them and flew them down.

Three of the 10 soldiers who tried to climb the mountain Thursday suffered from acute mountain sickness.

The route they took is not as technical as some but still requires climbers to cross a steep ice field and a ledge that is very narrow at points.

On Friday, they helped one another to the top of the snowy peak, with rangers on hand to assist. Once they reached the top, a helicopter began ferrying them down the mountain.

The route the personnel took is not as technical as some but still requires climbers to cross a steep ice field and a ledge that is very narrow at points.

Park rangers are helping evacuate military personnel in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park after some had trouble climbing one of the state’s highest peaks.

Park spokeswoman Kyle Patterson says 10 people from Fort Carson in Colorado Springs were involved in a climbing training Thursday on 14,259-foot Longs Peak, but a few of them had trouble continuing. The group ended up spending the night. Patterson says they’re helping one another get to the top of the mountain Friday and that rangers are helping as needed. Rangers plan to fly them down from the snowy summit by helicopter if weather permits.
