Trial begins for Army sergeant charged in his wife’s killing

BALTIMORE – An Army sergeant charged with killing his wife is on trial in federal court in Baltimore.

News outlets report the trial began Monday for 37-year-old Sgt. Maliek Kearney in the shooting of 24-year-old Army Pfc. Karlyn Ramirez.

The Baltimore Sun reports Assistant U.S. Attorney James Warwick told jurors Ramirez’s body was discovered inside her Severn townhouse in 2015 with her 4-month-old daughter asleep and unharmed in her arms.

Kearney was stationed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina when his wife died, while she was at Fort Meade. He is charged with crossing state lines to commit domestic violence resulting in death.

Defence attorney Kwasi Hawks told jurors Kearney’s jealous girlfriend, 33-year-old Dolores Delgado, was responsible for Ramirez’s death. Delgado already pleaded guilty and Warwick says she’ll testify in the coming days.
