Train derails in Wisconsin, prompting officials to close highways, start voluntary evacuation

ALMA, Wis. – Emergency crews are on the scene of a train derailment in western Wisconsin that closed highways and prompted a voluntary evacuation of nearby residents.

Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office says 32 cars derailed about 8:45 a.m. Saturday near Alma, which is along the Mississippi River. A statement from BNSF Railway says initial reports are that 20 cars derailed, including empty auto racks and tanker cars of denatured alcohol.

BNSF says there are no reports of fire, smoke or injuries.

WKBT-TV (http://bit.ly/1Qljj1o ) says parts of two state highways are closed. Emergency personnel are waiting for a crew from BNSF to evaluate whether roads can be reopened and people can return to their homes.

The sheriff’s office says the Alma American Legion is set up for those who left their homes.
