Nathan Lane leaves ‘The Nance’ after leg injury; unclear if he’ll be onstage Thursday night

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Nathan Lane injured his leg during Wednesday’s performance of “The Nance” and had to pull out of the show, leaving it unclear if he will make it onstage for Thursday’s performance.

According to a spokeswoman for the play, Lane was unable to finish Wednesday night. His understudy went on instead.

In Douglas Carter Beane’s play, Lane plays a “nance” — a show business term for a stereotypically camp homosexual man — who is struggling both with his own identity and frustration at society’s hypocrisy toward homosexuality.

Lane, a Tony winner for “The Producers” and “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” was nominated this year for “The Nance,” which features a large rotating set the actors must navigate as it spins.
