How major US stock indexes fared Monday

The major U.S. stock indexes posted an uneven finish Monday, as gains in banks were offset by losses in industrial companies and other sectors.

Banks rose as bond yields moved sharply higher. Technology stocks also posted solid gains. Industrial companies, consumer goods stocks were among the big decliners. More stocks fell than rose on the New York Stock Exchange.

On Monday:

The S&P 500 index rose 5.15 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 2,806.98.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 13.83 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 25,044.29.

The Nasdaq gained 21.67 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 7,841.87.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks picked up 1.61 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 1,698.41.

For the year:

The S&P 500 is up 133.37 points, or 5 per cent.

The Dow is up 325.07 points, or 1.3 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 938.48 points, or 13.6 per cent.

The Russell 2000 is up 162.90 points, or 10.6 per cent.
