Evacuation alert expanded to 148 properties in rural Oliver

OLIVER – The regional district is expanding an evacuation alert north of Oliver tonight.

The potential for a debris flow through the Sportsmens Bowl Road area, across Highway 97 and down Park Rill Creek for several kilometres is possible as a culvert and dam above Secrest Hill Road are in danger of releasing water and debris.

Up to 148 properties could be affected and are subject to the expanded evacuation alert, issued by the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen tonight, April 16, 2018.

This includes homes on portions of Covert Place, Highway 97, Horsetail Road, Island Road, Knight Road, Pampas Grass Way, Park Rill Road, River Road, Secrest Hill Road, Sitka Road, Sportsmans Bowl Road, Test Orchard Road and Wheatgrass Road.

See the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen website for detailed information regarding how residences affected and how to prepare to evacuate.

The Oliver Fire Department is assisting in delivering notices.

A state of local emergency has been expanded for all Electoral Area “C” within the regional district.

Highway 97 remains open at this time and no residents have been asked to leave their properties yet, but this could change.

For more information, see the regional district website, email: info@rdos .bc.ca, or call 250-490-4225.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
