WIND WARNING ENDED: Squall was expected to bring strong winds

UPDATE: The wind warning has been rescinded.

THOMPSON-OKANAGAN – Much of the Southern Interior will be under a wind warning later today with expected wind gusts of up to 90 km/h for Kelowna, Vernon and Penticton and 80 km/h for Kamloops as a squall line crosses into the region.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement this morning noting a ‘significant upper trough of low pressure’ will cause a squall line to develop over the South Cariboo in the afternoon. They upgraded to a warning at 11 a.m.

The system will intensify as it crosses into the South Thompson and Shuswap regions early in the evening and the Nicola and Okanagan regions near mid-evening. The system is expected to reach as far south as Penticton.

Southwest winds of 30 km/h gusting to 50 km/h will shift abruptly to northwest 50 km/h gusting to 70 km/h with the squall line.

During the day we can expect to see slightly above normal highs of 24-25 C and while Kelowna, Vernon and Penticton will see lots of sun today Kamloops will be under a mix of sun and cloud with a 30 per cent chance of showers late this evening.
