Rescue dog lost along Coquihalla Highway reunited with new family

A rescue dog lost on the Coquihalla Highway on Saturday has been reunited with its owners.

Sydney Schoenfelder says the dog was found yesterday, Dec.16, around five kilometres from the Comstock exit on the Coquihalla where the dog had escaped its harness on Saturday.

Sydney and her husband Colton had just picked the dog up in Vancouver and were on their way home when they stopped at the Comstock exit on Saturday afternoon.

The dog became frightened by the traffic, backed its way out of its harness and bolted into the woods.

“We had a sighting reported to us yesterday so we had an idea of the dog’s possible location,” Schoenfelder says.

Sydney and her husband Colton have another dog, Willow, who they brought with them to the location on the highway.

She says Colton and Willow no sooner began walking the fence line along the highway when Willow sniffed out the missing pooch.

“He let us pick him up. He was really cold and hungry, but he seems okay otherwise. We’re so grateful,” she says.

Sydney say Angel’s Animal Rescue of Merritt were able to set a live trap for the dog yesterday, which they checked every couple of hours.

“If it wasn’t for them, I don’t know how we would have been able to get the news out, and have this person contact us,” Sydney says.

“Angel’s did an amazing job, we’re so thankful to them.”

The couple are going to name their new dog Timber because he was found under a tree.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
