Inmate preparing claim against Kamloops prison
KAMLOOPS – An inmate at the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre is preparing a small claims suit against the prison because he says the conditions there are causing him stress.
Matthew Robert Barber, who is currently in custody for mischief-related charges, filed the claim earlier this week, but it was filed improperly and a completed document is expected soon. In his initial claim, he alleged poor prison shower conditions caused him mental anguish.
He asked for $5,600 for the stress of being exposed to biohazards such as the smell and sight of urine, blood and feces from other inmates in the centre’s showers and cells.
Barber broke it down to $3,200 for stress, $1,200 for anxiety and another $1,200 for humiliation.
B.C. Corrections declined to comment because the claim has not been served yet. Provincial corrections doesn't allow media to observe operations but spokesperson Cindy Rose says cleaning standards are met at the centre.
"B.C. Corrections has daily schedules for cleaning showering facilities and strict policies outlining the clean-up of blood and bodily fluids, which are treated as potentially infectious biohazards. In addition, all B.C. Corrections’ showering facilities have privacy barriers on the shower stalls."
None of the allegations have been discussed or proven in court.

This is totally ridiculous and it will not be heard simply because Small Claims Court can’t deal with emotional related cause of actions, only property and financial causes.He can only be heard in Supreme Court, and they will only consider claims above $25000.In Supreme Court, he will be confronted by layers opposing him.In other words, it is a waste of time.

Seriously, you think you deserve your own shower, make changes and maybe you won’t end up back there … This guy better not end up with anything or that means if u sit on a dirty toilet you can sue for the stress of it COME ON!!!!!!

Well now Jr., if you got a real job, became a good decent functioning person in society you wouldnt be there in the first place! You want to be in place where your subjected to all of your complaints, try nursing, or working for the cities sewer department and maintence or garbage collecting!I hope the judge throws you back in for several more months on the crime of severe stupidity!

well you have got to be kidding…it isn’t even April Fools day..if you don’t want to do the time, don’t do the crime…I have NO sympathy for anyone in jail for any reason.it is not a vacation spot it is intended for the person to learn a lesson and to not break the law again..
