Emergency crews were dispatched to a serious collision on the Trans-Canada last night after a cell phone crash detection alert.
Along with the crash detection alert, police received multiple 911 calls about the single-vehicle crash at around 6:40 p.m., Oct. 27, in the 3900 block of Highway 1 near Cherry Creek, according to an RCMP media release.
A grey Ford Focus travelling eastbound on the highway went off the road to the right and down a 60-foot embankment.
A New Afton Mine rescue team responded to the crash along with RCMP and paramedics.
The five people in the car were taken to hospital, RCMP said, while three people were treated and released, and two others remain in hospital in critical condition.
“The cause of the crash is still being investigated, however, at this time impairment was not a factor in the crash,” Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dana Napier said in the release.
Anyone on the highway near the time of the crash and has dash camera footage of the grey Ford Focus going off road is asked to contact Tk’emlúps Rural RCMP at 250-314-1800 and cite file 2026-36059.
