‘Everyone loves candy’: Retro candy shop opening in Kamloops

A new store selling retro candy and sweets from around the world, is opening in Kamloops this weekend and there’s a lot of excitement building.

“Everyone loves candy and people are getting excited about it, that’s what we want to hear,” said the store owner’s assistant Shannon McMichael.

Lemon Drop Candy Shop is located in the North Shore right beside The Lemonade Stand, a tobacco shop selling smokes and marijuana paraphernalia. Both are owned by Wesley Lesosky.

McMichael said the new location came up for rent after the previous business, Adultz Kamloops, closed its doors and The Lemonade Stand staff were ready to snap up the space.

“We thought, we want to try something different, and all of our employees came up ideas. We all wanted to do a candy store,” McMichael said. “We knew there was another candy store in Kamloops but it closed down.”

Along with retro and European sweet treats, Lemon Drop will carry salty and savoury snacks, ice cream and candy-themed items like stuffed toys and jewelry. Everything is purchased from distributors in Canada.

“I’m very excited to be working in a none age restricted store where the kids can come in,” said The Lemonade Stand employee Brooklyn McMichael, who will be working at the candy store in the future. “It’ll be really fun to see kids and families getting excited about the different candy.” 

Nate Connors has been working at The Lemonade Stand for three years and will also be covering shifts at the new candy store.

“I love candy myself so having a candy store here instead of having to go to Vancouver for cool candies is really nice, there will be a little bit of everything,” he said.

If everything goes smoothly, Lemon Drop Candy Shop at 253 Tranquille Road is opening its doors for a soft launch this coming weekend on Saturday, May 10 and Sunday, May 11 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
