Kelowna cops crackdown on crime in Rutland
Kelowna RCMP have been directing its attention towards Rutland, seizing drugs and making arrests.
The Crime Reduction Unit started patrolling the neighbourhood more at the start of September and by Sept. 26 officers had seized nearly 400 grams of drugs, illegal cigarettes, around $7,500 cash, five weapons, a stolen bicycle and a vehicle, according to a press release from police issued today, Oct. 9.
“At the beginning of September, we announced a shift in focus for the Crime Reduction Unit from primarily patrolling Kelowna’s downtown core over the summer months to broadening our efforts into other areas requiring attention, including the Rutland community,” RCMP Sgt. Scott Powrie said in the release.
Officers arrested multiple violent offenders and impounded two vehicles.
Officers found someone with outstanding warrants for aggravated assault involving a weapon and arrested them in Ben Lee Park, RCMP said. In the same area officers found someone else with a weapon, breaching release conditions tied to a 2023 manslaughter conviction.
“We are actively listening to the concerns raised by Rutland residents and business owners,” Cpl. Michael Gauthier said in the release.
