Snow expected to turn to rain by Sunday in Kamloops, Okanagan

Some Kamloops and Okanagan residents may need snow shovels for the next couple of days before an influx of warmer air brings temperatures back above zero on the weekend.

Environment Canada says Kamloops shouldn’t see much more than flurries today, Feb. 18, and tonight.

East winds gusting to 40 km/h are expected this afternoon and tomorrow in Kamloops, bringing a warming trend with them. Today’s high of 1 Celsius is expected to build to a high of 13 C by Sunday, along with possible showers for the weekend. Kamloops’s normal high and low for mid-February is 5 C and -4 C.

Vernon residents may need those snow shovels, with a forecast calling for two centimetres of snow tonight followed by another two to four cm overnight. Temperatures will begin rising above freezing on Friday, with showers and a high of 5 C expected by Sunday.

Kelowna could see two cm of snow today before south winds tomorrow bring temperatures above the freezing mark. Kelowna can expect flurries and a high of 3 C tomorrow and possible flurries overnight Saturday before the snow is replaced by rain along with a high of 5 C on Sunday.

Penticton could see two cm of snow today before south winds pick up later this morning. Winds at 40 km/h gusting to 60  are expected today with a high of 0 C expected. The temperature should climb to 3 C Friday with flurries possible and south winds at 20 km/h gusting to 40. Saturday’s mix of sun and cloud, and high of 4 C is expected to give way to possible showers and a high of 5 C on Sunday.

Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton’s normal high and low for this time of year is 3 C and -5 C.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.

As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
