A BC private secondary school teacher who had a sexual relationship with a vulnerable student months after graduation has been barred from teaching for 15 years.
According to a June 9 BC Commissioner for Teacher Regulation decision, Jonas Alexander Douglas Huston had quit teaching before the sexual relationship began five months after the student graduated.
“Huston was aware that the student was vulnerable to Huston’s advances because of the personal relationship that Huston had fostered with the student,” the Commissioner said in the decision.
The decision said Huston maintained close contact with the student after graduation and knew she was vulnerable.
The teaching regulator said Huston’s conduct had the effect of abusing and exploiting the student.
“Huston breached his position and power and trust as a teacher to engage in an intimate and sexual relationship with the student,” the regulator said.
The decision didn’t say where in BC Huston taught, only that he was teaching at an independent school and first got his teaching licence in 2004. His teaching certificate was cancelled Nov. 1, 2025, for non-payment of fees.
It is unclear how the school became aware of the relationship, but in January 2025, it reported the matter to the regulator.
Huston later signed a consent agreement admitting to the relationship and his behaviour.
The Commissioner issued Huston a 15-year ban from applying for a teaching license.
