BC Wildfire hit Kamloops blaze with tankers, helicopters

A wildfire within Kamloops city limits has grown to about three hectares on Monday afternoon as firefighters attempt to tame the blaze.

BC Wildfire Service got the call in the early afternoon on July 27 and responded to the scene with Kamloops Fire Rescue. It started along a hillside in the Campbell Creek area just on the edge of city limits.

Fire information officer Cali Nessman said air tankers and helicopters are attempting to douse the flames, with ground crews from both the wildfire service and the local fire department are at the scene.

She added that by 2 p.m. air tankers had “almost completed their objectives,” while helicopters continue bucketing the fire and ground crews work on the scene.

According to the wildfire serivce’s map, the blaze is near the Campbell Creek gravel pit access road and above the BC Wildfire Park.

It’s burning slowly so far, categorized as a rank two fire, Nessman said.

“That suggests a ground fire with minimal open flame and a slow rate of spread,” she said.
