Kompany: Musiala back in Bayern team training after collapses, will miss season opener

MUNICH (AP) — Jamal Musiala is still working toward a comeback after a change to his medication for a neurological issue, Bayern Munich coach Vincent Komany said Thursday.

Musiala hasn’t played since collapsing in successive preparation games this month and will not take part in Friday’s Bundesliga opener against Stuttgart. But he was to be a full participant in team training on Thursday, Kompany said.

“That means he’s getting used to the increase in medication, that’s he’s reacting well to it,” Kompany said.

“He will be in the squad again sometime and he’ll play normally again, but of course we’ll take that decision hand in hand with all the (medical) experts and so on,” he added. “But he’s doing well.”

The 23-year-old Musiala first collapsed in a friendly against Leipzig on Aug. 15, then again three days later against Heidenheim. He subsequently said he was diagnosed with “absence seizures caused by a neurological dysfunction” but there was “no additional health risk” and that he intended to keep playing as before.

Kompany and Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl said on Aug. 21 that the club had been aware of Musiala’s condition for at least the previous saason and that a change in the player’s medication had triggered the on-field incidents.

“Now the task is to adjust the medication again so he gets back to where we were before — a state where he had been seizure-free for a very, very long time,” Eberl said.

Bayern opens its Bundesliga title defense at home to Stuttgart on Friday.
