Mussolini’s great-grandson scores his first goal for Lazio

SASSUOLO, Italy (AP) — Romano Floriani Mussolini, the great-grandson of former Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, scored his first goal for Lazio on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old Floriani Mussolini — who has “Romano” on the back of his jersey — struck in the 16th minute for Lazio’s third goal in its 6-2 rout of Sassuolo in Serie A.

His celebrations were initially cut short by the offside flag, but the Lazio youth product managed to celebrate properly when the goal was given on video review.

It was also Mussolini’s first goal in the Italian top flight and only the second of his career. His first had come in the second-division, two years ago, while on loan at Juve Stabia.

The defender, whose full name is Romano Benito Floriani Mussolini, is related to Benito Mussolini through the maternal side of his family. He has said publicly that he has no interest in politics.
