Hurricane Paine beginning to weaken in Pacific off Mexico

MIAMI – Hurricane Paine is beginning to weaken in the Pacific off Mexico’s coast.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Paine’s maximum sustained winds Monday night are near 80 mph (130 kph) and it is expected to weaken to a tropical storm by Tuesday morning.

Paine is centred about 285 miles (460 kilometres) west-southwest of Cabo San Lazardo, Mexico, and is moving northwest at 13 mph (20 kph).

Elsewhere, a new tropical depression in the far eastern Atlantic has winds near 35 mph (55 kph) and is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm Tuesday.

In the central Atlantic, Tropical Storm Karl was beginning to strengthen Monday night. The storm’s maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph (75 kph) and it is centred about 760 miles (1,225 kilometres) northeast of the Leeward Islands.
