Suspicious fire in vacant commercial building

KELOWNA – Investigators are on the scene Sunday morning looking for the cause of a suspected arson fire at a vacant commercial building in Kelowna.

The fire at about 12:30 a.m. was contained to the basement of the building at 4624 Lakeshore Road.

Heavy black smoke was pouring from vents in the roof of the former Fresh Green Grocer as firefighters arrived.

Platoon captain Dale Calhoun says smoke damage was extensive.

No word yet on the exact cause of the blaze, but it's suspected homeless people who had been staying in the building may be responsible for the fire.
