Potential hazmat spill on North Thompson River in Kamloops contained

KAMLOOPS – A potential hazmat spill has been contained on the North Thompson River near the North Shore this afternoon.

“It looks like a petroleum product of some sort,” Kamloops Fire Rescue Operations Assistant Chief Curtis Bossert says, adding crews have contained the area with a floating barrier.

Bossert says they received a call around 4:15 p.m. today, Nov. 23, when someone noticed a substance coming out of a pipe near Sydney Avenue and heading towards the river.

“I believe it’s a storm drain. The (contents) could be coming from any place in North Kamloops,” he says.

While the amount is 'small', Bossert says the Ministry of Environment has been called in to help determine the source of the content.
