Newly discovered Cezanne sketches, found on the back of watercolours, to be displayed in Philly

PHILADELPHIA – A pair of previously unknown sketches by Paul Cezanne will be displayed in Philadelphia following their recent discovery on the backs of two watercolours.

They’ll be on view at the Barnes Foundation in double-sided frames, with both sides visible, from Friday through May 18. One sketch is in graphite, the other in watercolour.

The art institution says the images were uncovered during conservation work on two Cezanne paintings depicting the landscape of southern France.

Officials say the sketches haven’t been seen since at least the early 20th century.

Following their display to the public, the watercolours will be returned to their original locations on the walls of the Barnes.
