Omar Khadr’s lawyer highlighted as a guest speaker this week at TRU law event

KAMLOOPS – Law students at Thompson Rivers University will be presenting the school's annual two-day conference starting today, Feb. 3, with Omar Khadr’s lawyer highlighted as one of the guest speakers later this week.

The conference, centred around civil liberties and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, will be a two-day event complete with legal professionals lecturing on various judicial topics.

Lectures from Micheal Vonn and Dennis Edney — two keynote speakers — will be open to the public.

Vonn, an adjunct professor at UBC law, is a lawyer and policy director of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association. She is a regular speaker on civil rights concerns including privacy, security, policing, surveillance and free speech. Vonn’s keynote address will be at 4:30 p.m. today, in TRU’s Old Main Building room OM3652.

Edney will speak at the same time in the same room tomorrow, Feb. 4. As a renowned defence lawyer, Edney is best known for defending Omar Khadr, a Canadian convicted of murdering an American soldier in Afghanistan. Khadr was the youngest prisoner and the last Western citizen in the American prison at Guantanamo Bay.
