Wind remains threat for shoreline flooding as Okanagan Lake slowly recedes

KELOWNA, B.C. – Although water levels are receding, windy conditions still pose a flood threat to lakefront properties in British Columbia’s Interior.

Central Okanagan Emergency Operations says Okanagan Lake dropped about two centimetres overnight but remained 66 centimetres above full pool on Thursday morning.

Environment Canada has forecasted winds of up to 30 kilometres an hour in the coming days, which could whip up waves.

Property owners have been reminded to continue monitoring and adjusting flood protection measures.

Officials say Okanagan Lake will not return to normal until the end of July.

Some of the two million sandbags that were used since early May are slowly being removed as upland creeks and streams around Kelowna and through Lake Country are no longer at risk of flooding.
