Danzig Moon suffers fatal injury at Woodbine, has to be euthanized

TORONTO – Race horse Danzig Moon had to be put down on Sunday after suffering a fatal injury at the Plate Trial Stakes at Woodbine.

Danzig Moon injured his right-hind leg going into the far turn of the $150,000 race. Jockey Julien Leparoux pulled up the son of Malibu Moon immediately, but made contact with trailer R U Watchingbud, who fell as well, tossing his rider, Emma-Jayne Wilson.

Danzig Moon was euthanized. Leparoux, Wilson and R U Watchingbud were unhurt.

“The injury consisted of a compound fracture and the horse was humanely euthanized,” said Dr. Grey Taylor, commission veterinarian for the Ontario Racing Commission. “The horse will go for a post mortem at Guelph (Equine Guelph Hospital).”

The John Oxley-owned Danzig Moon finished fifth in the 2015 Kentucky Derby, then sixth in the Preakness to eventual Triple Crown champion American Pharoah.

Danish Dynaformer and jockey Luis Contreras won the race, finishing the mile and one-eighth Polytrack in 1:49.81. Conquest Curlinate finished second while Conquest Boogaloo came third.
