James Rajotte, an Alberta MP since 2000, says he’s not seeking re-election

EDMONTON – A long-serving Conservative MP from Alberta says he won’t be seeking re-election.

James Rajotte, who represents Edmonton-Leduc, released a statement on Sunday saying he won’t be a candidate in the upcoming federal election.

Rajotte doesn’t explain in the statement why he won’t run again, but notes he’s “proud to leave Parliament with Canadians better off” and the country stronger than when the Conservative government took office.

He also thanks his constituents, colleagues, and Prime Minister Stephen Harper for his leadership.

Rajotte was first elected in 2000 and has served as chairs of the finance committee, as well as for science and technology.

He says in the statement that future parliamentarians should continue to work on initiatives like the Reform Act, which he says would allow MPs to fulfil their roles of public policy formation and of oversight.
