MONTREAL – Canada’s natural resources minister is encouraged that Quebec’s premier is open to exploring the possibility of shipping Albertan oil into her province.

Newly elected Quebec Premier Pauline Marois and Alberta Premier Alison Redford say they will examine the economic benefits and environmental risks of pumping oilsands crude to Eastern Canada.

Speaking to reporters today after a speech in Montreal, federal Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver says he’s pleased Marois has opened dialogue with Redford and other provincial leaders at a premiers’ meeting.

Oliver says the proposal to reverse the flow of an Enbridge pipeline would bring jobs to Quebec and could translate into savings at the pumps for consumers.

A pipeline proposal to send Albertan oil to the Pacific coast has sparked tensions in the West over economic and environmental concerns.

Quebec’s environment minister has expressed concerns the project could lead to oil spills and is planning an environmental review on the Enbridge proposal.

The project is being reviewed by the National Energy Board.
