‘Tart and very fruity’: Tin Whistle in Penticton brews prickly pear cactus beer

From the semi-arid, antelope-brush ecosystem deep in the South Okanagan comes a beer described as rosy red, tart — but not lip-puckering sour — and very fruity.

The latest offering from Tin Whistle Brewing in Penticton is called Queen of Tart.

The limited time brew was made from over 250 lbs. of prickly pear cactus fruit, according to a Tin Whistle media release.

The brewery is donating five cents from every can sold to the Osoyoos Desert Centre.

“Tin Whistle’s mission is great beer, less impact,” co-owner Alexis Esseltine said in the release. “Our Queen of Tart Prickly Pear Sour brings this mission to life with proceeds of this beer going directly to support the incredible antelope brush ecosystem here in the Okanagan Valley.”

You buy the beer at the brewery’s taproom at the Cannery Trade Centre in Penticton, and it’s also available in private liquor stores in the Okanagan, along with select bars and restaurants.

Tin Whistle is one of the original craft breweries in the South Okanagan and the first carbon neutral brewery in B.C.
