REDCLIFF, Alta. – A British Columbia man is facing charges after a tense confrontation involving RCMP on the TransCanada Highway.

Mounties say that on Canada Day their Redcliff, Alta., detachment received three separate calls of an erratic driver passing other cars on the shoulder of the highway.

They say the vehicle was seen travelling at 163 kilometres an hour, more than 50 kilometres an hour over the posted speed limit.

Mounties pulled over the car, which by then had a flat tire, but say the driver got out and tried to forcefully remove the driver of another vehicle that was parked nearby.

RCMP officers moved in to try and prevent the attempted carjacking, saying the driver refused to co-operate and was placed under arrest only after “much struggle.”

Daniel Joseph Landry of Coquitlam, B.C., has been charged with attempted robbery, fail to remain at the scene of an accident, dangerous driving, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and attempting to disarm a police officer.

He will appear in provincial court in Medicine Hat, Alta., on Tuesday.

Mounties say no one was injured in the incident.
