OTTAWA – Five artists from across Canada have made the short list for the Sobey Art Award.
This year’s contenders include Halifax-based William Robinson and Berlin-based Vancouver artist Jeremy Shaw.
Toronto resident Charles Stankievech, who hails from Okotoks, Alta., Edmonton-based Brenda Draney and Montreal’s Hajra Waheed round out the list.
The grand prize winner is awarded $50,000, while each of the other shortlisted artists receives $10,000.
The artists will have their works exhibited at the National Gallery of Canada from Oct. 6 to Feb. 5, 2017, and the award will be handed out at a gala event at the gallery in November.
The prize for Canadian contemporary artists aged 40 and under was initiated in 2002 by the Sobey Art Foundation.
