UPDATE: Police now in pursuit of ‘Okanagan Autobahn’ driver for excessive speeding

LAKE COUNTRY – A driver posted a video of himself doing almost 180 km/h on a stretch of Highway 97.

The video, titled Vernon to Lake Country Autobahn, was uploaded by user Okanagan Bob on July 31. An embedded speedometer shows him reach 179 km/h.

This stretch of highway has been the scene of many fatal accidents over the years, but according to the description attached to the video, the uploader does not seem worried.

“Traffic was light, so why not?” it says.

RCMP Const. Jesse O'Donaghey says they have reviewed the video and plan to take action.

The video "clearly shows a motorist travelling at dangerously high speeds along Highway 97 between Lake Country and Vernon," he says. "Efforts will be made to identify the registered owner of the vehicle and or its driver and if identified either could face potential Motor Vehicle Act charges."

"The RCMP strongly encourage motorists to obey the posted speed limits, not to avoid tickets but to avoid unnecessary tragedy."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact RCMP Central Okanagan Traffic Services (COTS) at 250-980-5353.
