Kelowna firefighters use ATV Gator to rescue injured hiker

KELOWNA – A hiker was exploring the Jake Smith Lake area in upper mission today when they sustained injuries from a fall.

The hiker was rescued and taken from the scene in stable condition and is now in the care of B.C. Ambulance Services.

Platoon Captain Dennis Miller says in a release that at approximately 12:30 p.m. today, the Kelowna Fire Department responded to a call from BCAS requesting assistance with a hiker in distress.

Miller says the fire department deployed their ATV Gator to locate the injured hiker.

"It gets used if we need to go into an off-road area. The Jack Smith Lake area has hiking and mountain bike trails that are inaccessible with a normal pick up truck," Miller says.

Working together with BCAS, firefighters stabilized the injured hiker and transported them to the waiting ambulance.

The Kelowna Fire Department sent an engine, an ATV Gator and six firefighters to the scene.
