Canada drops 12-5 decision against United States to open under-19 world championship

COQUITLAM, B.C. – Timmy Kelly scored three times as the United States beat Canada 12-5 on Thursday to open the under-19 lacrosse world championship.

Michael Sowers, Simon Mathias and Ryan Conrad had a pair of goals apiece as the Americans (1-0) built up an 8-2 lead at halftime that the Canadian side could never overcome. Mac O’Keefe, Jared Berndhart and Brad Smith also scored while Willie Klan only had to make eight saves for the win.

Riley Curtis, Ethan Walker, Tanner Cook, Treton Leclaire and Ben French scored for Canada (0-1). Caelahn Bullen took the loss after allowing eight goals on 13 shots. Kyle Hebert didn’t do much better in relief, stopping just four of eight shots.

Canada’s next game is on Saturday against England.
