Everyone on Kamloops city council running for re-election

Get ready Kamloops voters because the local election is coming and the ballot will include the entire list of incumbents.

Coun. Katie Neustaeter announced her intention to run for another term, making her the ninth and final politician around the horseshoe to throw their hat in the ring.

“Serving as your city councillor has been one of the greatest honours of my life. Together, we’ve navigated immense challenges, created opportunities, and continued building a community that we’re proud to call home. But there’s a lot more work to do,” she said in an Aug. 17 news release. “That’s why I’m seeking re-election.”

She was the last among the current city council who hadn’t announced their plans.

Neustaeter has joined seven of the current council members looking for another term, while Coun. Mike O’Reilly is the only incumbent taking on Reid Hamer-Jackson for mayor.

Councillors Dale Bass, Nancy Bepple, Margot Middleton, Stephen Karpuk, Bill Sarai and Kelly Hall have all announced their plans to campaign for council seats.

Campaign season got started in Kamloops early and, aside from incumbents, there are at least a dozen more people who have also stated their intentions to run.

Former city councillor Nelly Dever is also running for mayor, along with business owner and former councillor Ray Dhaliwal potentially joining the race.

For council, there are some familiar names like Dennis Giesbrecht and Randy Sunderman, who have both run in previous elections, and Kathrine Wunderlich, who challenged the City’s Build Kamloops loans in court. Brian Andrews, a union organizer, will also be in the race along with Nevin Webster, a local online creator.

Local city hall watchdog group Kamloops Citizens United has kept a running list of candidates, which can be found here.

The official list of candidates won’t be available until Sept. 11 when the nomination period closes.

The municipal election will take place Saturday, Oct. 17.
