First degree murder charge laid, nearly two decades after Burnaby shooting

BURNABY, B.C. – Nearly two decades after a 26-year-old man was shot to death in Burnaby, charges have been laid in the murder.

Burnaby RCMP say 40-year-old Jaswant Singh Gill is accused of first degree murder in the slaying of Thomas Eldon Akerman, who was found shot to death in his car in December of 1994.

Mounties confirm Gill is the same person charged with second-degree murder last month in Vancouver in connection with the disappearance of his wife, 33-year-old Gurpreet Gill

She was the bride in an arranged marriage and had been living in the Vancouver area when her family in India reported her missing in 2006.

Police say the two murders are not linked and Gill remains in custody while awaiting his next court dates in both cases.

Mounties say a joint investigation with Vancouver Police led to the arrest. (The Canadian Press,CKNW,News1130)
