Builder chosen for wood innovation centre to showcase B.C. wood products
PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – A company has been chosen to build what the B.C. government says will be North America’s tallest wood structure, which will be used to showcase the province’s wood products.
Jobs Minister Pat Bell says PCL Constructors Westcoast will design and build the $25 million Wood Innovation and Design Centre, which will rise almost 10 storeys above downtown Prince George.
The building will be made of wood from all across B.C. and show off B.C.’s expertise in wood construction and engineered wood products, including laminated lumber.
The government says the design is flexible and could be repeated in other building projects, and the hope is this will help expand the market for B.C. wood products.
The centre will house wood-related research facilities, industry and possible government offices, and may also host classes from the University of Northern B.C.
Work on the project is expected to begin this spring and be complete by next year.
