Jordan border troops kill 2 alleged infiltrators from Syria

AMMAN, Jordan – Jordan’s military says border guards have killed two suspected infiltrators trying to enter the kingdom from Syria.

The military says guards spotted the two late on Thursday while they were still on Syrian soil.

An army statement on Friday said the two were killed after clashes but did not elaborate. It was not clear where along the border the incident took place.

Some 64,000 Syrian refugees are stranded in desert tent camps in two sections along the Jordanian-Syrian border, waiting to be admitted to Jordan.

In recent weeks, Jordan has increased the pace of admissions of refugees from those camps to several hundred a day. However, crowds at the border are expected grow to as many as 100,000 by the end of the year if fighting in Syria continues.
