CP to allow rafters to cross railway tracks to get to world-class rapids

GOLDEN, B.C. – Rafters wanting to get to world-class rapids on the Kicking Horse River in southeastern British Columbia will be allowed to cross land belonging to Canadian Pacific Railway.

CP had announced that it would ban rafting companies from using an unmarked rail crossing near Golden at the only point where rafts can be launched into the river’s lower canyon.

But a meeting between CP, town officials and river-rafting companies has led to a solution.

Details haven’t been released, but Golden Mayor Ron Oszust says the rafting season will not be delayed.

He says there couldn’t have been a better outcome as a ban would have hurt the companies and Golden’s tourism industry.

The town is holding a celebration next Saturday that includes a raft through the town and a barbecue.

“This is wonderful news and CP Rail has come to the table and been the great corporate citizen and partner that they’ve always been in our community,” Oszust said after the meeting Friday.
