LONDON – British luxury goods maker Burberry said first-quarter retail sales rose 18 per cent to 339 million pounds ($505 million), driven by double-digit growth in Asia and the Americas.
The iconic trenchcoat maker said Wednesday that shoppers snapped up spring/summer fashions designed by creative director Christopher Bailey, and that its investment in digital retailing had paid off. Bailey has championed the melding of digital and mobile technology with the Burberry brand, and his catwalk shows are now live-streamed to fans worldwide via online channels like Twitter.
The company says the much-discussed integration of its beauty division is on target.
Despite the results, Angela Ahrendts, the chief executive officer, says the outlook remains uncertain and that the company would focus investment on high growth opportunities.
