Kelowna RCMP find body of Kamloops man in Okanagan Lake

WEST KELOWNA – Police recovered the body this morning of a 23-year-old man who drowned in Okanagan Lake in Kelowna on the weekend.

A boater saw a body in a shallow area of Okanagan Lake about 400 metres from Maude Roxby Wetland around 7 a.m. today, July 19, according to an RCMP media release.

At about 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, eight people were boating on Okanagan Lake when they stopped for a short swim between Gyro and Kinsmen Park. After swimming, the boaters started to travel towards William R. Bennett Bridge, when they noticed the 23-year-old from Kamloops was not on the boat, RCMP said. When they couldn't find him the call police at about 6:30 p.m.

Police and Central Okanagan Search and Rescue volunteers with support from an RCMP helicopter searched Okanagan Lake in Kelowna but couldn't find the missing man.

RCMP have not released the man's identity. 

Police have notified the man's family and the West Kelowna RCMP will assist the B.C. Coroners Service with the investigation.
